WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Eight Sedgwick County jail deputies have been suspended during an investigation into the sale and possession of illegal steroids, Sheriff Jeff Easter said Wednesday.
All the activity, which had been going on for a year, apparently took place outside the facility and was contained within that group of deputies, Easter said. It does not appear any illegal steroids were introduced into the facility.
“It is not something that we are very proud of whatsoever,” Easter said during a news conference with reporters. “But the sheriff’s office has always taken the stance that we will address it upfront, we will inform the public of what we are doing.”
Seven men and and one woman have been suspended with pay pending the outcome of any charges, he said. Three of them are believed to have sold the illegal steroids. The officers, which include two corporals, range in ages from 27 to 48.
No charges have been filed.
Easter said the steroids, which are used to enhance muscle tone, included both pills and shots.
Investigators executed a search warrant at a residence, and are testing the steroids they obtained. The case is being referred to the district attorney’s office for possible charges.
