VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Authorities say that a fugitive homicide suspect from Maryland has been shot dead after officers tried to arrest him at a residence in Virginia.

U.S. Marshals said in a statement that the unidentified man was shot in Virginia Beach on Wednesday morning after he “produced a handgun.”

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said that no law enforcement officers were injured.

Maryland’s Montgomery County Department of Police said in its own statement that the U.S. Marshals were assisting its cold case detectives. The department said that a “confrontation with the suspect ensued resulting in the detectives using deadly force.”

Montgomery County police said that its detectives will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

Virginia Beach police said that they will conduct an investigation into the shooting, along with the U.S. Marshals.

Virginia Beach is the state’s largest city. The shooting occurred in a neighborhood that’s about 10 minutes away from the Atlantic ocean.

The city is about 220 miles (354 kilometers) from the county of seat of Montgomery County, which is north of Washington, D.C.
