COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - The dean of the engineering school at the University of Maryland has been named the school’s next president, officials announced Wednesday.
A news release from the University System of Maryland said its Board of Regents appointed Darryll J. Pines, Ph.D., as the 34th president at the College Park school.
His appointment is effective July 1, officials said.
“I’m excited by this new challenge and can’t wait to listen, learn, and lead this incredible university,” Pines said in a news release.
Pines joined the school’s faculty in 1995, when he was as an assistant professor. He later served as chair of the department of aerospace engineering from 2006 to 2009. He has served as both dean and the Nariman Farvardin Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Clark School since January 2009.
“The Board is delighted to welcome as president of our flagship institution a leader of the caliber of Dr. Pines,” Board of Regents Chair Linda Gooden said in the news release. “The University of Maryland, College Park is a world-class institution, and Dr. Pines brings to the position a wealth of experience.
Pines will succeed Wallace Loh, who had led UMD since 2010 and announced plans to retire in June. Loh said Pines will be “a great president … as he leads the flagship university forward.”
Loh had planned to step down at the end of the last school year in the wake of a crisis stemming from the 2018 death of a football player due to heatstroke.
