St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester remains in the hospital to undergo further tests Wednesday after experiencing a “cardiac episode” and losing consciousness on the bench during Tuesday’s game.

Bouwmeester, 36, reportedly was grabbing a drink of water on the bench when he slowly slumped over midway through the first period of the Blues’ game against the Anaheim Ducks. He became unconscious, but was revived with a defibrillator before being helped out of the arena.

“Jay Bouwmeester is doing very well at the UC Irvine Medical Center in Anaheim,” Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said Wednesday in the first update since Bouwmeester was hospitalized.

“Jay is currently undergoing a battery of tests to determine the how and why of what happened last night, but things are looking very positive.”

Armstrong thanked the Ducks’ medical staff for their “life-saving efforts” and became choked up as he directed a message to Bouwmeester’s wife and family.

“To Jay, Devon and the girls, the Blues organization and the entire hockey world are with you and are looking forward to your speedy recovery,” he said.

The Blues-Ducks game was halted Tuesday and will be rescheduled. Armstrong said he expects the teams will restart from the start of the first period, but start with a score of 1-1, which is where it left off Tuesday night.

The Blues’ game Thursday night at the Vegas Golden Knights will be played as scheduled.
