BOSTON (AP) - A man wanted for murder in Massachusetts for nearly 30 years who fled to the Dominican Republic will be arraigned Monday, according to the FBI.
The FBI Boston Division said Jose Armanda Betances has been turned over to the agency. Special agents were scheduled to meet Betances at Boston’s Logan International Airport Friday night.
Betances is scheduled to be arraigned in Woburn Superior Court on a murder charge for the death of Andrew Alexander on May 12, 1990 in Lowell. Betances allegedly shot Alexander between the eyes, according to the FBI.
The 17-year-old Alexander was shot after he threw a rock through the window of a car that his ex-girlfriend was riding in, police told The Boston Globe at the time. Betances was allegedly driving the car, police said.
It’s unclear whether Betances is represented by an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
An arrest warrant was issued for Betances in Lowell District Court in 1990. A federal arrest warrant was issued in August 1990 on a charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Investigators located the 58-year-old in the Dominican Republic, the FBI said. Betances was arrested outside his residence in November and held in custody pending his extradition to Massachusetts.
