JAY, Maine (AP) - The owner of a Maine paper machine that went offline after an explosion in April said it plans to keep the machine idle.

The explosion at Androscoggin Mill in Jay has kept the machine offline for months. A rupture of a wood pulp digester connected to the machine stopped manufacturing at the mill for more than a week.

Pixelle Specialty Solutions will continue to operate two paper machines that manufacture specialty papers, the Sun Journal reported. The company will not rebuild the pulp mill and will instead use pulp sourced from other mills, the Journal reported.

The mill has eliminated almost 177 jobs since the explosion. Pixelle, of Pennsylvania, said it has set up a fund of $1 million to support retraining for former mill employees displaced as a result of the digester explosion.
