After watching Alex Smith and the Washington Football Team topple the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night, there’s no doubt in J.J. Watt’s mind: Smith is the obvious Comeback Player of the Year.
The Houston Texans’ defensive end — whose brothers, T.J. and Derek, play for Pittsburgh — knows from experience what injury issues can do to a player. He required back surgery for a herniated disk in 2016, broke his leg in 2017 and tore his pectoral muscle in 2019.
But to see Smith back on the field following 17 surgeries — and playing at the level he is — awed Watt, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year recipient.
“What Alex Smith has done is unbelievable,” Watt tweeted. “Comeback Player of the Year even before taking a snap. But playing winning football after everything he’s been through is even more incredible.”

Comeback Player of the Year even before taking a snap.
But playing winning football after everything he’s been through is even more incredible.
Smith orchestrated Washington’s 23-17 upset win over the Steelers on Monday night, completing 31 of his 46 attempts for 296 yards and a touchdown. In Smith’s four starts this season, the quarterback has averaged about 250 passing yards per game, and he’s led the Football Team to wins in three of those four outings.
