SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says it is examining a police officer’s fatal shooting of a man in a homeless camp.
GBI said in a news release that Savannah Police Department officers on Saturday were responding to a property owner’s request that they remove homeless people from some land.
The release said that as officers approached a tent, a homeless man emerged in an aggressive manner holding a razor knife and another sharp object. The man did not drop the weapons and charged at one officer. The officer shot him, the GBI said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was being withheld until his family could be notified. The investigation showed he was from California.
No officers were injured.
The GBI will present the findings of its investigation to the Chatham County district attorney’s office.
