Seeing blood seep from anyone’s leg is disconcerting. But when it’s gushing from Alex Smith, perhaps it’s even more so.
Late in the second quarter of Monday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Washington Football Team quarterback had trainers wrap his leg because blood was soaking his legging and dripping down across his cleat. The bloody leg was Smith’s left — his non-surgically repaired leg.

Smith appeared to be cleated by an offensive lineman a few plays earlier, which may have caused the gash. After his leg was wrapped, he sat on the sideline looking at a tablet as if blood wasn’t everywhere.
And then Smith took the field to finish the first half, taking a few sacks before Dustin Hopkins knocked a 49-yard field goal through the uprights to make it a 14-3 game.
