For former Washington Football Team quarterbacks, this has been a week of opportunity.
First, Robert Griffin III received his second start since 2016 when he led the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday He filled in for Lamar Jackson, who had tested positive for the coronavirus.
Now, Colt McCoy will make his fourth start since 2014 on Sunday, replacing Daniel Jones. Jones had been doubtful all week with a hamstring injury, but the Giants made his absence official before New York’s late-afternoon kickoff against the Seattle Seahawks. Jones injured his hamstring in the third quarter of last week’s win over Cincinnati.
McCoy entered late in that 19-17 victory, completing 6-of-10 passes for 31 yards. That was McCoy’s lone action so far this season with the Giants. McCoy did start one game for Washington last season — a 33-7 loss to the Patriots in which the 34-year-old threw one interception and 166 yards.
In five seasons at FedEx Field, McCoy featured sparingly. He started four games in 2014, including a 20-17 victory over Dallas. The next week, McCoy compiled one of the best games of his career, throwing three touchdown passes and 392 yards — both career highs — in a loss to the Colts.
Between 2015 and 2019, McCoy played in only six games, throwing four touchdowns and four interceptions in that span.
He’ll have another opportunity Sunday against Seattle in his first season as a Giants player. The Seahawks’ defense hasn’t been as stout of a unit this season as normal, although that group looked solid last week against Carson Wentz and the Eagles.
