OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - There were 4,370 newly reported coronavirus cases Saturday in Oklahoma according to the state health department and the seven-day rolling average of new cases has topped 3,000 per day.
The rolling averages of new cases rose from 2,843 per day on Nov. 20 to 3,044 on Friday and daily average of deaths increased from 15.7 daily to 22.3 during the same period, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The rolling average of the positivity rate declined from 17.1% on Nov. 20 to 16.3% Friday.
The increase is due largely to community spread, according to both the health department and Dr. Dale Bratzler of the University Oklahoma medical center.
“It’s typically places like restaurants, bars, gyms, places of worship, places where you come indoors where there is some reason you’re taking your mask off. That is where people get infected,” according to Bratzler.
There have been 213,245 total cases in Oklahoma since the pandemic began, the health department said, and 1,874 deaths due to COVID-19, including 14 reported Saturday. The true number of infections in Oklahoma is likely higher because many haven’t been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick.
