OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Online retail giant Amazon announced Thursday plans to employ more than 500 workers at a new fulfillment center in Oklahoma City that is scheduled to open next year.
Amazon announced in a press release from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce that workers at the new 1-million-square-foot facility will start at $15 per hour and mostly work to ship larger-sized items like patio furniture, outdoor equipment or rugs.
“At a time when job creation is so vital, we are thrilled that Amazon has chosen to expand their presence in our state,” Bent Kisling, executive director for the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, said in a statement.
State commerce officials say Amazon has created more than 4,000 jobs in Oklahoma and invested more than $650 million in wages and infrastructure since 2010. The company already operates two fulfillment and sorting centers, two delivery stations and three Whole Food Markets in Oklahoma.
