NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Tulane University athletics are getting more than $1.5 million from the estate of a late fan, and $1 million of it will establish a fund to expand mental health support of Tulane’s 350 student athletes.
The Alan H. Rosenbloum Mental Health Endowed Fund will provide numerous wellness services, suicide prevention education, patient assessment, treatment planning and coordination, the university said in a news release. It will also let the department, which hired its first mental health professional four years ago, hire a fourth mental health professional to work with student-athletes.
“Alan Rosenbloum was a devoted fan of Tulane Athletics, but he also cared deeply for student-athletes and their health both on and off the field.” Tulane President Michael A. Fitts said. “This gift will help ensure that the support we give our student-athletes goes beyond cheering for them and continues to address their physical, social and mental well-being.”
Rosenbloum, who died in late 2019, received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Tulane in 1961. After earning a law degree from Washington University he became an attorney in Pensacola, Florida.
As a member of Tulane’s Green Wave Club, he attended most Tulane games and collected Green Wave memorabilia including game programs, posters, photographs, all of which he left to Tulane.
“More than ever, a focus on the mental health of our student-athletes is critical to ensuring a healthy, safe and positive educational and athletic experience,” athletic director Troy Dannen said.
