ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Police in St. Paul are investigating after a 2-year-old boy was shot to death.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that officers were called to an apartment building in the city’s North End on Wednesday afternoon on a report of a child who had hurt his head. The officers learned on arrival that the boy had been shot. He died in an ambulance eight minutes later, police spokesman Steve Linders said.
Detectives took three teenagers who were reportedly in the home at the time into custody for questioning. It’s not clear who was holding the gun when it went off, whether others were involved or whether the shooting was accidental, self-inflicted or intentional, Linders said.
If the child’s death is ruled a homicide it would mark the 34th homicide in Minnesota’s capital city this year, tying the record for the city’s deadliest year in 1992.
On Monday, bullets ripped through the wall of another St. Paul apartment, narrowly missing the crib of a 5-month old and a toddler sleeping nearby.
Minneapolis also has been plagued by gunfire this year, with more than 500 wounded and 81 killed, the highest counts since the mid-1990s.
