An 18-month-old baby from California is safe and sound thanks to the courage of Marine Gunnery Sgt. Kyle Wetter.

The hero was recently driving near Camp Pendleton when a family’s car burst into flames. He rushed into action without hesitation.

“All I could think at first was ’what the heck happened?’ “Immediately, I was like, ’I need to help them any way I can,’” he said in a press release, Marine Corps Times reported Tuesday.

Gunnery Sgt. Wetter, a staff noncommissioned officer in charge at Camp Pendleton’s formal marksmanship training center, had no time to spare when he and driver Anthony Hurly could not disengage a safety seat.

He literally took matters into his own hands by using his pocketknife to free the child from the jammed seatbelt.

“I am forever grateful for Gunnery Sgt. Kyle Wetter,” Mr. Hurly, the child’s father, said in the release. “He came at a time of need for my family.”
