CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) - The University of Northern Iowa received a $2 million donation to build an artificial turf football field, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported Monday.
Construction on the outdoor practice facility is set to start in the spring.
Doug and Ann Goschke donated the money in honor of Doug’s late sister, Junean Goschke. She graduated from the State College of Iowa, now the University of Northern Iowa, in 1966.
“As a former collegiate football player, I know that you play like you practice,” Doug Goschke said in a statement. “Having a practice field with turf similar to your competition is a plus.”
Head Football Coach Mark Farley told the newspaper that the artificial turf field will allow the team to practice in all weather conditions late into fall and in early spring.
The new facility also is expected to ease scheduling conflicts between football, track and softball practices at the UNI-Dome, as well as high school football championships, sport shows and concerts held there.
