GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (AP) - Authorities say a northern Nevada sheriff’s deputy is recovering from a gunshot to the face and a parolee from California and a woman who was with him are jailed on felony charges after an exchange of gunfire during a traffic stop in Gardnerville.
Sgt. John Lenz was being treated at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno for a facial wound, and Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley issued a statement saying he was confident that Lenz will recover.
Authorities corrected initial reports that Lenz had been wounded in the neck and said two other gunshots to his chest were stopped by his ballistic vest in the 11:15 p.m. Sunday shooting.
Nicholas Berreman, 22, was treated for a gunshot to his hand and jailed in Carson City along with Kaela Mae Horse-Berreman, 31, who was arrested with him, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said. Both are from Markleeville, California. They are not married, Furlong said.
Berreman had been sought on a fugitive warrant on a parole violation from California, the Douglas County sheriff’s office said.
He was jailed to await an initial court appearance on multiple felony charges including battery with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, Furlong said, and Horse-Berreman was held on a felony charge of aiding a felony offender.
Neither had a lawyer immediately named who could speak for them.
Berreman was convicted of assault with a firearm on a police officer in Alpine County, California, and sentenced in June 2019 to four years in prison, the Douglas County sheriff’s office said in a statement. He had been released prior to serving his full sentence.
