SMYRNA, Ga. (AP) - A man was shot and killed during a Thursday morning drug raid in a suburban Atlanta apartment complex, authorities said.

Members of the Marietta Cobb Smyrna Organized Crime Task Force and the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team were executing a search warrant for drugs before dawn near Smyrna, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said, when an officer shot a man in the apartment. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It’s unclear whether the SWAT team member fired his gun intentionally, authorities told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, saying they’re still investigating that question..

The man’s name wasn’t being released until authorities notified relatives. The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy.

No officers were injured.

The Cobb County district attorney will decide whether to pursue criminal charges against anyone involved after GBI completes its investigation.

Its the 92nd time GBI has been asked to investigate an officer shooting someone this year, according to the agency. There were 84 such shootings in 2019.
