The Washington Nationals and Max Scherzer have yet to seriously discuss a possible contract extension as the three-time Cy Young winner enters the last year of his contract.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Scherzer’s agent Scott Boras said that he’s had a few conversations with Nationals’ ownership about the situation, but is planning for further talks with “Mr. Lerner,” referring to principal owner Mark Lerner.

“We’re going to get together after the new year, and have some discussions, so we’ll see how that goes,” Boras said.

Scherzer, 36, joined the Nationals in 2015 on a seven-year, $210 million contract. The deal has been nothing but a success for Washington as Scherzer has been one of the league’s best pitcher in that span. He won the Cy Young award in back-to-back years in 2016 and 2017 and helped the Nationals win their first ever World Series in 2019.

Scherzer is coming off a 2020 in which he posted a 3.74 ERA in 12 starts.
