Senate Majority Mitch McConnell congratulated President-elect Joseph R. Biden Tuesday after the Electoral College certified his win.
“Our country has officially a president-elect and a vice president-elect,” Mr. McConnell, Kentucky Republican, said. “The Electoral College has spoken.”
He also congratulated Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, noting the historical significance of her win.
“Beyond our differences, all Americans can take pride that our nation has a female vice-president elect for the very first time,” he said.
Mr. Biden told reporters Tuesday that he had a “good conversation with Mitch McConnell today” and called to thank the Kentucky Republican for his remarks on the Senate floor.
The GOP leader praised President Trump’s accomplishments over the past four years and said he looked forward to a strong finish with that administration over the next few weeks.
Mr. McConnell and most of the GOP conference did not acknowledge Biden as the winner of the 2020 election before Monday, saying President Trump had a right to pursue legal challenges.
However, the majority of the party said the Electoral College vote turned the page and several called for the nation to move on.
Mr. Biden said Monday evening that he received several calls from Senate Republicans congratulating him on the election.
The final tally was 306 Electoral College votes for Mr. Biden to 232 for Mr. Trump. The votes will be sent to Washington, where they’ll be counted by Congress on Jan. 6.
