KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - The parent company of clothing and home products retailer Urban Outfitters plans to build a new, 880,000-square-foot distribution center in Kansas City, Kansas, state and local officials announced Wednesday.
The new URBN center will be near the Legends entertainment and shopping district and NASCAR’s Kansas Speedway and close to the junction of Interstates 70 and 435. The center is expected to create nearly 2,000 new jobs and represents a $350 million investment.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly joined Mayor David Alvey of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, in announcing the project. The Unified Government said ground will be broken on the distribution center in the fall and it should be operating in early 2022.
Kelly called the distribution center “a transformational project for our state.”
The Unified Government said Urban Outfitters has committed to hiring 35% of the new workers from Wyandotte County and using local, minority and women-owned businesses during construction of the facility. The new distribution center will include 60,000 square feet of office space.
URBN Chief Development Officer Dave Ziel said the new center will allow the company to reach digital customers faster and more efficiently.
