Allen Iverson reacted to John Thompson’s death on Monday, thanking the legendary Georgetown coach for the impact he had on the point guard’s life.
Iverson spent two years at Georgetown from 1994 to 1996, becoming the first player under Thompson to declare early for the NBA draft. But before he became a star at Georgetown, the Hampton, Virginia native had spent four months in jail for getting into an altercation at a bowling alley. Iverson was forced to complete his senior year at a school for at-risk students, but Thompson still offered him a scholarship.
On Monday, Iverson posted his heartfelt tribute to Twitter:
Thanks For Saving My Life Coach. I’m going to miss you, but I’m sure that you are looking down on us with a big smile. I would give anything just for one more phone call from you only to hear you say, “Hey MF”, then we would talk about everything except basketball……. pic.twitter.com/03yj4gZv5q
