NBA players have decided to resume the playoffs after a series of boycotts postponed three postseason games Wednesday in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake, according to ESPN.
The development comes after multiple reports indicated that most players — except on the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers — were in favor of continuing the season.
The network reported Thursday that the players decided in a meeting to go on for the rest of the year. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Thursday’s games will be postponed, and discussions are underway for when play will resume.
The league’s owners also met for a meeting Thursday to discuss the protests.
The Athletic reported that the league’s players want to find “new and improved ways to make social justice statements.” When the season resumed from the coronavirus pandemic last month, the league had focused on its social justice efforts — having social justice statements on the backs of jerseys, having “Black Lives Matter” painted on the court and players dedicating press conferences to victims of police brutality and racial injustice.
The NBA originally had three scheduled games Thursday.
