Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday said his GOP majority is helping save America from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s agenda, saying Democrats aren’t interested in improving life for people in “middle America” and that they want to dictate how many hamburgers people can eat.

“Today’s Democrat party doesn’t want to improve life for middle America - they prefer that all of us in flyover country keep quiet and let them decide how we should live our lives,” the Kentucky Republican said in a videotaped address for the Republican National Convention.

Democrats want to tell you “even how many hamburgers you can eat,” he said.

“I’m immensely proud of the work the Republican Senate has done,” he said. “We are the firewall against Nancy Pelosi’s agenda. Like President Trump, we won’t be bullied by a liberal media intent on destroying America’s institutions.”

Mr. McConnell has been a steady ally for Mr. Trump on Capitol Hill, prioritizing the confirmation of the president’s judicial nominees.

He frequently keeps his thoughts to himself when asked about the president’s more provocative comments or tweets.

Mr. McConnell, who is up for re-election this year, is trying to protect his party’s effective 53-47 majority in the Senate.

“The stakes have never been higher, which is why I’m asking you to support Republican Senate candidates across the country and re-elect my friend, President Donald Trump,” he said.

Republicans are defending seats in a number of competitive states, including Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina, Maine and Iowa, and have comparatively fewer realistic pick-up opportunities compared to the Democrats.
