Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema ordered that “an Islamic scholar serving a life sentence for soliciting treason after the Sept. 11 attacks be released from custody while he pursues his appeal” (“Islamic scholar ordered released while appeal is pursued,” Aug. 18). Whatever the merits of her decision, a previously published statement by Judge Brinkema that she “was never worried about Muslim extremism” raises serious concern. One hopes that she was simply expressing her confidence in the FBI and other U.S. agencies. If, on the other hand, she was expressing trust in the good offices of radical Islam, America would be well served by her recusal from all cases involving the same.
