NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A private university in Louisiana is getting $5.5 million for its center to study and support all areas where sport engages society.
The Douglas J. Hertz Family Foundation is donating the money to Tulane Center for Sport, said a news release Tuesday from Tulane University.
The school said the gift will be used for initiatives for current faculty members and leadership and to attract prominent faculty members, visiting professors and adjunct instructors. It also will support and expand the center’ existing programs.
The center studies sports’ part in fields including human health, the law, labor agreement, marketing and finance, and media, as well as entertainment and competition, according to Tulane.
The gift will also help pay an administrator to oversee planning, coordination and implementation of sports law competitions, the Tulane Sports Executives Club, the Tulane Center for Sport Speaker Series, career services opportunities and other initiatives.
“Our family is thrilled to support the vision of interdisciplinary studies on a subject that has become so important in the daily lives of many Americans,” said Doug Hertz, the immediate past chairman of its board.
Hertz and his wife, daughter, son and sister all are Tulane graduates.
The Hertz family established the Lila L. and Douglas J. Hertz Endowed Chair in Psychology in 2007, named the Doug and Lila Hertz Center in 2011, were lead donors to Yulman Stadium, donated to the A. B. Freeman School of Business and the New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute and has made numerous other significant contributions in support of Tulane.
