BOSTON (AP) - The suspect in the killing of a Boston convenience store clerk who died more than a month after he was shot during a robbery has been held without bail.

Stephon Samuel, 25, of Lynn, is charged with murder in the death of Tanjim Siam, according to the office of Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins.

Siam was working at the M&R Convenience Store in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood when he was shot at about 9 p.m. on July 14, prosecutors said. He died Saturday, a day after he was taken off life support.

Samuel pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday.

Siam was killed even though he turned over the contents of the cash register and other items, prosecutors said. Samuel forced Siam into another area of the store at gunpoint and shot him at close range, authorities said.

The shooting was captured by the store’s video surveillance system.

Siam was an immigrant from Bangladesh.

“Siam came here for a better life and his life was violently stolen,” Rollins said in a statement.

Samuel’s attorney, James Caramanica, called the case “a tragic situation.”

“Mr. Samuel has only just been arraigned and no evidence has been disclosed at this point,” Caramanica said in an email to The Boston Globe.
