SEATTLE (AP) - Hundreds of protesters demonstrated in Seattle Monday night in solidarity with protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and around the country over the police shooting of a Black man there.
One person in Seattle was arrested for investigation of arson after some people smashed windows, started fires and spray-painted graffiti, according to police.
Protesters started at Cal Anderson Park around 9 p.m. Monday, chanting “Black Lives Matter” and “No Justice, No Peace.” Demonstrators marched past the East Precinct, then to the West Precinct downtown and back to the East Precinct.
Throughout much of the protest, no police presence was visible, The Seattle Times reported. When the group returned to the East Precinct, some began throwing fireworks at the building and started a fire. Police then appeared, saying it was no longer peaceful and ordering the crowd to disperse.
One officer was injured, police said, but they did not give further information.
The shooting of Jacob Blake on Sunday in Kenosha was captured on cellphone video and ignited new protests over racial injustice in several cities, three months after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis touched off a wider reckoning on race.
Blake’s father said Tuesday his son is currently paralyzed from the waist down and has “eight holes” in his body.
