PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say a 16-year-old youth was shot and killed in west Philadelphia and gunfire elsewhere wounded several other juveniles as a wave of violence in the city showed no sign of letting up.
Police said the 16-year-old was shot multiple times shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday and collapsed on a street corner, where some people in a car went to his aid and a responding police officer took the victim to Temple University Hospital, where he died just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
Shortly after 3:30 a.m. Sunday in northwest Philadelphia, a 16-year-old was shot in the back and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. A 17-year-old youth shot in the leg was listed as stable.
In southwest Philadelphia shortly after 12:40 a.m. Saturday, a 15-year-old girl flagged down a police officer and reported she had been shot in the arm. Police said she had been in a park with a large group of people and some females started fighting, and at least two shots were fired.
Shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday in west Philadelphia, two men age 19 and 29 were near a park when they reported hearing gunshots and were wounded; both were in stable condition.
