CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Isaac Paredes hit a grand slam for his first major league homer and the Detroit Tigers snapped a 20-game losing streak against Cleveland by beating the Indians 10-5 on Friday night.

The Tigers also ended a nine-game slide that included being swept at home last weekend by the Indians.

The 21-year-old Paredes connected in the fourth inning when the Tigers scored seven times off Adam Plutko (1-2). Jonathan Schoop hit a two-run homer as the Tigers topped the Indians for the first time since April 10, 2019.

Cleveland’s 20-game dominance of Detroit was the second-longest streak against one opponent since division play began in 1969. Baltimore holds the record with 23 consecutive wins over Kansas City in 1969-70.

Rony Garcia (1-0) picked up the win for the Tigers, who got off to a surprising 9-4 start before staggering.

Franmil Reyes hit a two-run homer as the Indians had their winning streak stopped at six. They were again without manager Terry Francona. He underwent a medical procedure and missed his 15th game this season due to poor health.

PADRES 4, ASTROS 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Manny Machado hit a pair of RBI singles and scored a run, helping the Padres stop the Astros’ eight-game winning streak.

The Padres won their fifth straight but failed to add to their MLB record of hitting a grand slam in four straight games, which they accomplished in sweeping Texas in a four-game, home-and-home series. Eric Hosmer, who had the historic fourth slam on Thursday night, batted with the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth against the Astros and grounded out.

Machado singled home Hosmer in the first and singled in Trent Grisham in the two-run fifth, both off Lance McCullers Jr. (2-2).

Javy Guerra (1-0) struck out three in 2 1/3 hitless innings for the win. Emilio Pagán pitched the ninth for his first save.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Marcus Semien staked Mike Fiers to an early lead, Stephen Piscotty drove in all three of his runs with two outs, and the AL-best Athletics ran their home win streak to nine games.

The A’s (19-8) moved a season-best 11 games over .500 and have their best 27-game start since beginning 21-6 in 1990.

Fiers (3-1) allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Liam Hendriks got three outs for his ninth save.

Semien notched his third career leadoff home run and second this season as Oakland jumped on Andrew Heaney (1-2).

Abreu hit a three-run drive in the third inning and a solo shot in the ninth, giving the White Sox 22 homers in the past six games. They have outscored their opponents 48-12 in that span.

Biggio knocked in Brandon Drury from second to start the 10th with a double off Aaron Loup (3-1). Biggio went to third on a sacrifice bunt before Gurriel hit a sacrifice fly as the Blue Jays went up 6-4.

Yandy Diaz began the bottom of the 10th with an RBI single against Jordan Romano. The reliever got a grounder from Hunter Renfroe with two on for his first career save.

Thomas Hatch (1-0) worked a scoreless ninth for his first major league win.

Brandon Lowe and Diaz homered for the Rays, who were coming off a 9-1 road trip.

Teoscar Hernández and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered during a three-pitch stretch in the second. The Blue Jays have gone deep 28 times over their last 11 games.

DODGERS 5, ROCKIES 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler struck out 11 over six sharp innings in his best outing of the shortened season.

The Dodgers earned their ninth victory in 10 games and became the first team in the majors to win 20 this season. Every player in the Los Angeles lineup except Austin Barnes got a hit, although the catcher had an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Buehler (1-0) gave up four hits on 92 pitches in his fifth start of the season and didn’t issue a walk in going past five innings for the first time.

After an impressive start, the Rockies have lost a season-high five straight and 10 of 12 while dropping to .500. Jon Gray (1-3) gave up four runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Philadelphia bolstered its bullpen with two trades, getting right-handers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree from Boston and righty David Hale from the Yankees. The Phillies’ bullpen ranked last in the majors with an 8.07 ERA at the start of the day.

RED SOX 8, ORIOLES 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Xander Bogaerts, J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers homered as Boston won its season-high third in a row.

Darwinzon Hernandez (1-0) won in relief and Matt Barnes got his first save. During the game, the Red Sox announced they traded relievers Brandon Workman, Heath Hembree and cash to Philadelphia for pitchers Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold.

John Means (0-2) took the loss as Baltimore dropped its sixth straight game.

MARLINS 3, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Miguel Rojas hit a three-run homer in his first at-bat after being activated from the COVID-19 injured list, and the Marlins snapped a five-game skid.

Rojas connected in the second inning against Patrick Corbin (2-2), and that was all Miami needed to take the opener of a five-game series. Rojas hadn’t played since July 26, when the Marlins’ season was suspended amid a team-wide coronavirus outbreak.

Marlins starter Elieser Hernandez (1-0) pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs and three hits.

Yan Gomes and Trea Turner homered for Washington. It was Gomes’ 100th career home run.

Brandon Kintzler pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fourth save.

Cincinnati is 2-2 after a three-game pause because of a positive COVID-19 test. St. Louis has lost four of six. The teams combined for only five hits.

Michael Lorenzen (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and Raisel Iglesias pitched a perfect ninth for his third save. Iglesias blew a save opportunity during Thursday’s 5-4 loss to the Cardinals.

Génesis Cabrera (1-1) took the loss after working one inning.

MARINERS 7, RANGERS 4

SEATTLE (AP) - Rookie Kyle Lewis hit a solo home run and Nick Margevicius matched his career high with seven strikeouts, leading Seattle to the victory.

Lewis’ sixth homer in the second inning put the Mariners up 5-0 after Seattle batted around in the first against Kolby Allard (0-2). Lewis also displayed patience at the plate, scoring two of his three runs following walks.

Margevicius (1-1), acquired by the Mariners in January after he was cut by the Padres, earned his first win for Seattle after entering the starting rotation due to injury. He allowed four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Taylor Williams worked the ninth for his fifth save.

ROYALS 7, TWINS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jorge Soler hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and Kansas City beat Minnesota to open the third straight weekend series between the AL Central rivals.

Twins starter Jake Odorizzi (0-1) allowed five runs and seven hits before he was literally knocked from the game. Alex Gordon drilled him with a liner in the ribs, and the right-hander went to the ground immediately. X-rays taken at the ballpark were negative, and the Twins called his injury a bruised right abdomen.

PIRATES 7, BREWERS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Chad Kuhl pitched five effective innings for his first win in more than two years, and the Pirates rolled to the victory.

Kuhl (1-1) gave up a long solo home run to Ben Gamel in the second but otherwise kept the Brewers at bay to pick up his first victory since June 15, 2018.

The Pirates backed Kuhl with a 14-hit attack after managing five runs total during a four-game slide. Bryan Reynolds hit a solo homer off Adrian Houser (1-2) in the second and a two-run double in the eighth to give Pittsburgh’s shaky bullpen plenty of cushion.

Christian Yelich hit his seventh home run for the season for the Brewers, but Milwaukee managed just five hits against Kuhl and five relievers.
