OPINION:
In the lead-up to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s speech at the Democratic National Convention came this piece, from the National Catholic Reporter: “AOC embraces reproductive justice, and other Catholics should, too.”
It’s an illuminating piece that shows how the left can rephrase death and turn it into life — repackage evil and sell it as a product of love.
Here are some pertinent thoughts from the piece: “Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t view the issue of abortion simply as an issue of reproductive rights. She views it through the more comprehensive lens of reproductive justice.”
It’s breath-taking how deep the left will dig to find the right messaging to make abortion — abortion! — acceptable even to the (supposed) followers of Christ.
Another quote from the piece: “The framework of reproductive justice was developed in 1994 by 12 Black women in response to the Clinton administration’s proposed plan for universal health care. The women questioned the assumptions … being made by those who developed the health care plan. … Their core concern was this: When a person gets pregnant … [a]ll kinds of social justice issues come to the fore: workers’ rights, protection from domestic violence and abuse, immigration status, a clean and safe environment, and access to adequate education, health care and childcare.”
Out of those discussions came the revelation that, hey, we’re not just talking about a baby here — we’re talking about these larger themes of economics, and culture, and fairness and, hey now, here’s a term that’s not yet been used while talking about unwanted pregnancies, justice.
Move over reproductive rights.
Reproductive Justice has come to town.
The piece goes on at length to show just why it’s OK to have an abortion — why it’s even Christian to have an abortion — so long as the decision to abort came by way of reproductive justice arguments.
“These are the reasons why Ocasio-Cortez and I, who count ourselves among the 56% off U.S. Catholics who believe that abortion should be legal, embrace an ethic of reproductive justice,” the writer wraps. “These principles are all consistent with Catholic social teaching.”
The idea of Catholic politicians advocating on behalf of a woman’s right to abort is not new. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been a long-time defender of abortion while simultaneously claiming adherence to Catholic teachings.
But this new emerging lingo is head-shaking.
Defending abortion as reproductive justice is the utmost in propaganda.
Selling abortion as in line with heavenly principles is blasphemous.
Squashing a human life is squashing a human life, no matter what words are used to describe it. So, too, is evil.
