VENTNOR, N.J. (AP) - A Pennsylvania man was shot and killed by police last week after he allegedly advanced on officers while armed with a broken bottle along a southern New Jersey roadway, officials announced Tuesday.
Ventnor and Atlantic City officers responded shortly before 4:30 p.m. Thursday to a 911 call about Amir Johnson, 30, of Wilkes-Barre, behaving erratically in Ventnor, according to New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal. His office is conducting the investigation into Johnson’s death, as required by state law,
Officers found Johnson walking in and out of a marshy area along the roadway while holding a broken glass bottle in his hand, Grewal said. The officers tried to offer him aid but he refused their commands to drop the bottle and kept walking back and forth on the roadway, where police had stopped traffic, Grewal said.
Johnson “advanced on officers with the broken bottle in his hand and multiple officers fired their weapons,” according to Grewal’s statement. He was taken to a hospital in Atlantic City, where he was pronounced dead about 90 minutes later.
