MOLINE, Ill. (AP) - Ben Rogers, a long-time activist with the Boy Scouts of America in Illinois and Iowa, died Tuesday from complications resulting from COVID-19, a fellow scouting activist announced Tuesday.
Rogers, 67, of Moline, Illinois died at a Rock Island hospital after battling coronavirus for more than a month, Austin Mitchell said on the Illowa Council, Boy Scouts of America Facebook page.
An obituary posted by Rafferty Funeral Home in Moline noted Rogers was active for 40 years in all levels of scouting, including as the head cook at Loud Thunder Scout Reservation in western Illinois. Rogers instructed scouts working toward their cooking merit badge.
“He was simply the best, a giving man who was willing to lend a second hand no matter what was going on,″ said Mitchell, the Boy Scout camp ranger at Loud Thunder.
Rogers, who worked for the elevator manufacturer Montgomery-Kone, is survived by wife, Joan, and five children. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America or Sacred Heart Church in Moline.
