CHESTERTOWN, Md. (AP) - The driver in a weekend altercation with a Maryland trooper who shot the motorist has been charged with several crimes after being released from the hospital, the state police said.
Deny R. Coursey, 44, of Centreville, was charged with assault, fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving and other counts, according to a Maryland State Police news release. Coursey was being held without bond on Sunday at the Queen Anne’s County Detention Center. The jail had no information on whether Coursey had an attorney.
Investigators believe the trooper was dragged by Coursey’s pickup truck early Saturday on a Chestertown road when the trooper saw what appeared to be a suspected controlled dangerous substance in the center console.
The unnamed trooper told the driver repeatedly to stop and fired his weapon when he feared for his life, the news release said. He was dislodged from the vehicle and found in a ditch by backup officers, according to police.
Queen Anne’s sheriff’s deputies spotted the vehicle and pursued it before it ultimately was stopped. That’s when they discovered the suspect’s torso wound.
The trooper was treated at the hospital and is recovering at home. State police will investigate the shooting and present findings to local prosecutors.
