The latest reported idea to bring back one of the country’s beloved sports leagues includes one surprising element: a theme park resort.
The NBA has had discussions with Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, about resuming the basketball season there, The Athletic reported.
The Associated Press had previously reported that lawmakers in Florida viewed Disney’s campus there as an ideal spot to safely restart NBA games amid the coronavirus pandemic.
It follows similar ideas floated in recent weeks by the NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball about restarting seasons at one central location or a few “pods” or hubs, in the NHL’s case. The NHL is looking into bringing teams to a few markets like Edmonton, Canada, and Raleigh, North Carolina, to get hockey started again, while baseball’s idea was to set up shop in Arizona for several months.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania added that Disney has already offered its property to the NBA.
Disney World itself has been closed since March 16 due to the pandemic, the longest-lasting closure in the park’s history.
