DOVER, N.H. (AP) - The family of an American who was recently released after being jailed for months in his native Lebanon and is undergoing cancer treatment is taking things one day at a time, a daughter said.
Amer Fakhoury, 57, a restaurant owner in Dover, New Hampshire, was visiting family in Lebanon when he was seized and accused of decades-old murder and torture charges that he denied. He was ordered released by a judge last month.
Fakhoury is suffering from Stage 4 lymphoma. Seacoastonline.com reports that his hospitalization during the coronavirus pandemic means he’s had only limited interactions with his family. However, family members say they are more optimistic then they have been in a long time.
“Right now, we’re taking it one day at a time,” said Guila Fakhoury, the oldest of his four adult daughters. “We hope they send him home (soon).”
She said it was shock to see her father at a U.S. airport on March 19. He had lost a lot of weight.
“Right now, he is not only in a really terrible health situation, but he’s also suffering from PTSD,” said Fahkoury’s lawyer, Celine Atallah. “What he went through is too much.”
Local residents have started a fundraiser for him.
