Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan announced Tuesday he is forming a committee to explore the possibility of running for the Libertarian presidential nomination, making him a possible wild card in the 2020 race for the White House.

“We’re ready for a presidency that will restore respect for our Constitution and bring people together,” he said. “I’m excited and honored to be taking these first steps toward serving Americans of every background as president.”

Mr. Amash left the GOP last year after growing increasingly concerned with the direction of the party under President Trump — particularly when it came to the small-government principles the Michigan independent holds dear.

He voted for the articles of impeachment against Mr. Trump.

“Today, I launched an exploratory committee to seek the @LPNational’s nomination for president of the United States. Americans are ready for practical approaches based in humility and trust of the people,” Mr. Amash said.

The announcement adds a new wrinkle to a presidential race that has been upended by the coronavirus pandemic.
