The Washington Redskins went another day Friday without completing a trade involving disgruntled tackle Trent Williams, and like the previous night, their options for possible trade partners appeared to dwindle. The Minnesota Vikings, for instance, reportedly took themselves out of the running for the seven-time Pro Bowler after drafting Boise State tackle Erza Cleveland in the second round.
Despite no obvious candidate to acquire Williams, Redskins coach Ron Rivera said Friday that Washington is in “no rush” to complete a deal.
“There’s no hurry,” Rivera said. “We have opportunities and we’ll just continue to keep working on it.”
According to ESPN, the Vikings made the Redskins an offer for Williams involving a Day 3 draft pick, but Washington turned it down as it did not meet their asking price of a second-round selection or the equivalent of something similar.
The Vikings were thought to be one of the most realistic destinations for Williams, with Minnesota looking to compete for a Super Bowl with a veteran-heavy roster.
Other teams with a previous glaring need at tackle — the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers — used their first-round selections to fill the position.
NBC Sports Washington reported the San Francisco 49ers are one team interested in Williams. But it’s hard to see, as the 49ers already have 35-year-old Joe Staley, who carries an $11.5 million base salary in 2020 and hasn’t played right tackle since 2007.
If the Redskins can’t trade Williams this weekend, is it possible he plays for the Redskins next season?
“We’ll have to wait and see,” Rivera said. “We’re not going to speculate on something that’s an ongoing process right now, guys.”
