PHOENIX (AP) - A fire alarm prompted the evacuation of the control tower of Phoenix’s main airport and resulted in several flights being delayed or diverted while a regional control center directed the airport’s air traffic for about two hours Friday.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said a few flights headed to Sky Harbor International Airport were diverted to other cities while takeoffs of flights to Phoenix from other cities were delayed “for a short time.”
Kenitzer said the alarm sounded shortly before 6 a.m. and that tower operations returned to normal after people were allowed back in the building by 8 a.m.
In the meantime, the FAA’s air route traffic control center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, assumed control of airspace operations in Phoenix, he said.
Local media outlets reported that the affected inbound were diverted to Tucson, Albuquerque , Ontario, California, and El Paso, Texas.
There were no reports of damage or injuries.
