The Washington Redskins have established a deadline for teams looking to acquire the second overall pick.
“The first round to us, if it doesn’t happen before it starts, we’re not going to push it,” Redskins coach Ron Rivera told The Washington Times. “That’s the truth of the matter.”
Two weeks ago, Rivera indicated to Sports Illustrated that Washington would have a cutoff time for potential trades when they’re on the clock, but didn’t know when exactly that would be.
On Wednesday, Rivera revealed a plan has been finalized: The time will depend on the round.
Coaches and executives around the league have suggested that since this year’s NFL draft, which begins Thursday, will be held remotely, it could make it harder to conduct trades.
Rivera confirmed Wednesday reports that teams around the NFL have called about a deal for the Redskins’ No. 2 overall pick, but Rivera said, “we’re just listening.”
Rivera had previously said he didn’t think his “wishlist” for a trade to be completed was feasible.
If the Redskins don’t trade back, Ohio State pass rusher Chase Young is expected to be the pick. Rivera declined to say if the Redskins were still considering drafting a quarterback after adding Kyle Allen earlier this offseason.
Washington, though, appears ready for the draft. On Tuesday, Rivera shared his draft room setup that he has in his basement in a video for his partnership with USAA.
The Redskins also went through a mock draft Tuesday night to simulate this weekend’s process, Rivera said.
“If we don’t have a deal for what we’re looking for early on, we’re going to straight ahead and do what we want to do,” Rivera said regarding the second pick. “That’s what happens. We’ll see. Right now, we’re in a good spot.
“We like where we are. We’re excited about it.”
