Joseph R. Biden’s campaign is receiving friendly fire from his left flank by celebrity activist Cynthia Nixon accusing his campaign of courting “hard-core racists.”

A new ad by the Democrat addresses the coronavirus pandemic by casting President Trump as soft on China. Liberal activists, however, claim its an attempt to woo bigots who are angry over the contagion’s Wuhan origin.

“Who had Joe Biden put this hateful xenophobic ad up?” the former “Sex and the City” star tweeted Sunday. “Joe needs to focus on getting Democrats and Independents excited, not courting hard-core racists.

Mr. Biden’s ad appears to be a response to a 60-second spot by Mr. Trump’s campaign titled “Biden stands up for China while China cripples America.”

“During America’s crisis, Biden protected China’s feelings,” Mr. Trump’s April 8 ad claims.

Mr. Biden’s response includes footage of him saying, “I would be on the phone with China and making it clear: We are going to be in your country. You have to be open. You have to be clear. We have to know what’s going on.”

Ms. Nixon, a former New York gubernatorial candidate, told her 246,000 Twitter followers that Mr. Biden’s rhetoric would repel liberal activists.

“You won’t get them, Joe,” she said of “hard-core racists” on Election Day. “You’ll make the rest of us sick to our stomachs.”
