A eastern Iowa sheriff’s deputy is recovering after suffering serious injuries in a crash with a suspect who was fleeing a traffic stop, authorities said.

The crash happened Saturday afternoon, when a conservation officer said he saw Kevin Kraphl, 29, hit a pedestrian in Fayette County and drive off, the Des Moines Register reported. The officer tried to pull over Kraphl’s vehicle, but investigators said Kraphl fled.

The officer chased Kraphl through Fayette and Buchanan counties at high speeds before Kraphl’s vehicle crashed into Buchanan County Deputy Dan Walter’s patrol vehicle near the Buchanan/Delaware county line, the Iowa State Patrol said in a news release. Walter was seriously injured and flown to an Iowa City hospital.

The Iowa State Patrol said Kraphl tried to flee on foot, but was caught and arrested. Charges are pending against Kraphl, officials said.
