On Wednesday, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson asked the New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy where he got the authority to take away the right of the people of New Jersey to gather together and peaceably assemble, a right protected by the Bill of Rights. The governor’s response was that it was “above my pay grade” and that he hadn’t given it a thought.

Perhaps Mr. Murphy has forgotten the oath he took when assuming office: That he would support and defend the Constitution of the United States, of which the Bill of Rights is a part. That oath should be foremost in his mind as he attempts to exercise an authority that isn’t his.

Mr. Murphy is right about one thing, though: He’s not up to the pay he is receiving as governor. Thus, as he is unqualified to hold his present office, he should resign and find a job that has a pay grade more appropriate to his talents and character. The casinos will be hiring again soon.
