OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The Omaha District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced progress in repairing a levee system of the Platte River in eastern Nebraska damaged last year during devastating spring floods.

The Corps said in a written statement that it has awarded a $1.68 million construction contract to KEU Inc. of Vancouver, Washington, to repair a levee system between Valley and Fremont. Officials estimated that there are more than 1,300 structures and property worth $1 billion behind the system.

The Corps did not give an estimated completion date for the repairs, but said that “due to the magnitude of damage along those levees, repair efforts will take an extended period of time to complete.”

More than 350 miles of levees on the Missouri, Platte and Elkhorn rivers and tributaries that experienced significant flood damage since March 2019, the Corps said.
