LAS VEGAS (AP) - A police report says a Nevada man shot his parents because he was angry at his family for doubting his claims about hearing footsteps while he was under the influence of methamphetamine.
Police say Alfonso Fernandez shot and killed his father, Manuel, during a family cookout in Las Vegas on Saturday, the Las Vegas Sun reports. The 30-year-old Fernandez also shot his mother, who remained “extremely” critical condition on Friday, police said.
Lt. Ray Spencer said the family was having a cookout when an argument broke out. There were at least five people at the two-story house, including a toddler.
Fernandez lived at home with his parents and two sisters, the report said. No one believed his tale about the noises.
“Fernandez decided he was going to kill his mom and dad because it was their house and they make the rules,” a detective wrote in the report.
That’s when he told the sisters to leave but did not tell them why. His mother told him to stop, that he “was just hallucinating.”
The man asked his father to accompany him to the garage, the report said. Before shooting him, he told the elder Fernandez, “Why don’t you believe me?” the report said.
Afterward, he walked into the house and shot his mother in the living room, police said.
