JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi’s Republican Party is putting off its annual state convention because of the coronavirus.

In a news release Friday, the party said the event, initially set for May 15-16, has been postponed amid the state’s ongoing response to COVID-19. The state convention is held to allow the party to select delegates who will go to the Republican National Convention, where votes are cast to select the party’s nominee for president of the United States.

The party said it hopes to reschedule “as soon as it is safe to do so.”

In addition, the MSGOP is postponing all precinct caucuses and county conventions that would have been held this month.

“These events are an important part of the political process and while we were looking forward to holding them, I greatly appreciate Gov. Reeves’ granting us the flexibility to hold them later in the interest of public health and welfare,” MSGOP Chairman Lucien Smith said in the release.
