LYNN, Mass. (AP) - Officials at a Greek Orthodox church in Massachusetts are expressing dismay at the vandalism of two icons over the weekend.
Arthur Argeros, president of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn, says icons of St. George and the Virgin Mary were found vandalized Saturday.
They were spray painted with an upside down cross and the number “666.”
Argeros says this is the first time the church has been targeted and “parishioners were very upset.”
Police were notified.
WFXT-TV reports the two vandalized icons had a protective coating on them so the church was able to remove most of the graffiti without damaging them.
The city plans to send a professional power washer to clean off the remaining graffiti.
