PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s Health Insurance Commissioner says insurance rates for most small- and large-group plans will rise next year, although not as much as the state’s major health insurers had requested.
Average rates for the individual market will decrease under a so-called “reinsurance” plan developed by Health Source RI and approved by the General Assembly and the governor.
Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo says the decreasing premiums are proof that the “The Affordable Care Act is working in Rhode Island.”
Employees of small companies served by small-group market plans will see increases. The Providence Journal reports that Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island had requested a 5.6% rise, but the Office of the Health Commissioner granted 4.5%.
The office says $15.5 million was cut from the rate increases insurers requested.
