HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal says he’s not persuaded Senate Republicans would vote as a bloc to acquit President Donald Trump if he’s impeached by the House of Representatives.

The Democrat said Friday “we’re seeing some cracks” within the Senate GOP, which controls the chamber. He acknowledges it’s “privately more than publicly at this point.”

Blumenthal told reporters that as more information comes out about the Republican president’s actions concerning Ukraine, he believes his colleagues may “respond in the same way Republicans did during Watergate,” a reference to how political support eroded for former Republican President Richard Nixon.

Trump has denied wrongdoing and still appears to have strong GOP support. Some Republicans are defending him, while others have shrugged off the allegations.

But Blumenthal says some GOP senators have told him privately they’re deeply concerned.
