The NFL has abandoned its idea of an 18-game slate and instead is proposing a 17-game schedule to the NFL Players’ Association, according to multiple reports.

The league has received significant pushback to an expanded season. Teams play 16 regular season games per year and four preseason games.

As part of the 17-game proposal, the NFL suggested reducing the number of preseason games — either by one or two.

The league’s collective bargaining agreement expires in 2021 and the two sides are currently negotiating a new deal.
